Caughey talks 'Carpool Command’ and other training tips for ICs | Better Every Shift
You’ve probably heard of “Carpool Karaoke,” but what about Carpool Command? It’s one of many great training ideas shared by Laramie County Fire Authority Fire Chief Jason Caughey. Caughey offers insights on command training and tactics, plus how to create a command culture that’s baked into every part of training, even if you’re just driving around with your chief, singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” to get comfortable on the radio. And don’t miss all this:
• What it means to be a “bullfighter” chief
• The critical role of a command aide - a “senior set of eyes”
• How the echo method works on scene - and in relationships
• The debate about where to set up command

      This could only realistically be done with the built-in coolant loop. There's already an electrical fireman's disconnect. To directly cool the loop, you'd need to use the built-in cooling channels and have some sort of port interface for fire hoses and reinforce coolant lines. Though the inherent danger here, especially given the possibility of lithium-water reactions, means that it's better to just leave it alone and wait as shown.

    The "Observe" is spot on. Many times on scene there are sights and sounds that need to be explored. And a tip for those not at the Incident, is to listen to it. I don't mean because you're interested, some firefighters want to hear the incident and some don't. But it is very educational to the student of the Fire Service. And it might reveal something missed by those in the middle of the fight.

    It's Okay to be the idiot in the room but it doesnt mean you have to ask idiot questions about carcinogen in cigar smoke. Util smoking is ruled a prohibitive, firefighters are allowed to smoke. How about dealing with the smoke from fires? The hydrocarbons in smoke are HYDROPHOBIC and repel water. So what does the fire service do? We throw water at it. Surfactant molecules in Class A wetting agents break the high surface tension of water which allows water molecules to bond to water repellant hydrocarbons in smoke and fire gasses making them too wet to burn and too heavy to remain in the atmosphere. The whole reason this chief is going on about cigars and cigarettes is a political dodge to avoid pissing off the OEMs that wine and dine fire chiefs at fire confences so they will make multi-million dollar fire apparatus purchases from their dealerships. The same dealerships that rep the Original Equipment Manufactures who make a mint by selling 1500, 2000, 3000 and 10,000 GPM Super Pumpers (Like the ones FDNY buys). Follow the money. Cancer is all about money and the Fire Service is not immune to the games that people play that perpetuate the scourage of cancer. The more water used to put out a fire the longer it takes to put it out. The longer it takes to put out the fire the more fire fatalities (from smoke inhalation) there is. The more water you apply to a fire the more property damage (mostly water damage) there is. Adding about an ounce of wetting agent concentrate to every gallon of water applied to a fire puts the fire out 3 to 5 times faster per NIST. I've already written a complete 1 hour module on Foam Use for Pump Operators for Lexipol FireRescue1 Academy. I continue to author on this subject, give me a call. I'll do a Zoom call with Janell and Aaron and share everything I got on this subject.

    How did Chief Frieders go from calling firefighters "Stupid" to "the most important thing to do is take care of your people?" He just did a 180 degree turn from arrogant authoritian to Mr. Nice Guy in the course of a few short minutes. No wonder we aren't seeing any "Super Bowl Successes" with respect to cancer reduction in the Fire Service.

  • @jerryhughes5380
    @jerryhughes5380 5 месяцев назад

    I think Chief Frieders is stupid for not suppressing the carcinogens in smoke and fire gasses so the soot and nastieness never makes it to the bloodstream. SCBA provides proximity (passive protection). If you don't do anything to suppress smoke and fire gasses - which is now possible thanks to the science of wetting agents, you are not evolving WITH the science of firefighting.

  • @jerryhughes5380
    @jerryhughes5380 5 месяцев назад

    Chief Bryan Frieders has one thing right when he say's, "The culture and behavior is killing firefighters." The only problem is with this statement is that he is just as much a part of that culture as the firefighters smoking cigars in the firehouse. Cancer will always be a part of the fire service. That's because firefighters are exposed to the contaminants in smoke and fire gasses from fires in a much greater concentration than the general population (i.e., a sanitation worker that smokes cigars and rides on the back of a large diesel driven garbage truck). Please stop wagging your finger at firefighters for not doing what you proclaim to be the things that they should be doing to prevent cancer. Cancer got worse on Chief Frieders watch and mine so we are a part of the same culture that is currently exposed to the contaminants in smoke and fire gasses that he did nothing to suppress.

  • @jerryhughes5380
    @jerryhughes5380 5 месяцев назад

    As long as the Fire Service continues to believe that all they have to do to reduce cancer rates among firefighters is to address the proximate cause of cancer, there will be no significant reduction in cancers among firefighters. The Fire Service needs to address the root causes of cancers among firefighters, but to do so means that fire service leaders have to be willing to look at ways to suppress the carcinogens that give firefighters cancer (root cause) as opposed to just looking at passive resistance (i.e., inhalation, absorbsion, ingestion and injection) of carcinogens into the bloodstream (proximate cause). When Dr. Steve Kerber was asked why ULFSRI won't research the use of firefighting foams on Lithium Ion fires he said he would but you have to pay him to do it. Over half of Chicago Fire Dept. pumpers have on board foam injection systems. The surfactant in firefighting foam (PFAS free foam) breaks the high surface tension of water allowing water molecules to bond to the hydrocaron molecules in the electrolyte that burns inside the Li-ion battery. One of the reasons that the Lithium Ion battery fire problem continues to plague the fire service is because the only thing UL looks at in terms of an extinguishing agent is WATER. Fires are Chemistry and Physics. Water reduces heat (think physics here). What we add to water (think surfactants here) is where chemistry plays a key role in extinguishment. Keep in mind that ULFSRI accepts Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant money (AFG grants from FEMA), which means his organization IS BEING PAID to research the use of ALL resources, such as firefighting foam, that fire dept's have at their disposal. Bottom Line: UL is being paid to research the application of ALL extinguishing agents that are available to fire departments in the U.S. they just aren't doing what they are being paid to do. Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (retired) Chicago FD

      That’s not accurate. There’s no US Flag code for changing the colors of the flag, the U.S. military issues black and green flag patches for uniforms. The thin red line flag also isn’t an American flag, it may look similar, but it’s not the same. The past president of the North American Vexillogical Association (Study of Flags) Peter Ansoff covered it in a statement to Politico.

    Sleep deprivation is number one factor contributing to the health issues affecting fire service (including mental health). NO ONE in the positions that can change that for us will ever do anything to about it. That sleep window has been proven to be 10pm to 4 am according to circadian rhythms of all human beings. That makes our ability to shock the system back impossible in a day or two. Dr. Landry testimony proves that. It wasn’t until he changed the whole architecture that it benefited him. Our careers are devastating our health. THANK YOU! You are the first expert to be direct, open and honest about this. I have been to conferences and when asked about the impact of sleep on health, they always side step it. Side note- Dr Landry, your genetics have little to nothing to due with your family history of chronic disease. Sorry but you living in Africa would make your family be healthier but it’s the opposite of what you said. They don’t have these health issues because they don’t consume our horrible processed carbs and sugars we are fed in the west.

    I've never been to war or anything, but I've had several extremely-near-death experiences, 2 from other people, 1 where I got choked (not "choked out", oxygen deprivation not blood).. All I can recommend is anytime your focus is drawn to it, try your best to redirect your focus to something positive. Do everything you possibly can to not dwell on it, not think about it, and stop yourself from thinking about it. Some things take only weeks, some things take months.. some things take years -- but even when it takes years, it gets better over time. If it isn't getting better over time, or if it's getting worse, seek help.
